Fresh Start Program
The Academic Fresh Start policy allows previously admitted undergraduate students to establish a new academic record upon returning to Colorado State University to complete a degree already in progress. It allows students who were academically dismissed or who left on academic probation to return in good academic standing.
Much less frequently, it will be used by students who left in good standing and want to improve their GPA in preparation for application to graduate or professional school.
An Academic Fresh Start allows for a change in academic standing once an applicant is approved to return; it does not guarantee eligibility to return. For eligibility requirements and how to apply, please visit the Academic Fresh Start website.
Note: other institutions are not obligated to recognize our Academic Fresh Start policy and may not honor the new GPA.

New Start‘s education specialists support academic performance, foster reintegration to civilian life, identify valued career and life roles, and promote well-being throughout higher education at Colorado State University. Veteran Affairs
The VA can be reached by phone at 1-888-422-4551 (1-888-GIBILL1) for general questions/information, and electronically through the VA website for more specific questions/issues regarding individual student records.
It is imperative you keep track of how much time you have remaining with your benefit. The VA does not communicate that to us, and if we are not aware you are close to or have exhausted your benefit, you may experience a mid-semester change in benefit. This can result in the removal of your VA placeholder for tuition and fee payment, and you would be responsible for payment back to CSU or the VA.
According to the VA, the average time required for payment is eight weeks. However, this is not a definitive number. If you would like to have a better idea of when to expect payment we would recommend the following:
- Call the VA National Call Center at 1-888-442-4551.
- Ask VA
- Contact our office for assistance.
