Students must earn three credits in both Quantitative Reasoning (Math) and Intermediate Writing (Composition) to complete the All-University Core Curriculum (AUCC) Categories 1A and 1B. Refer to the General Catalog for more information.

Students (aside from first semester transfer and readmitted students) who have earned 60 or more CSU and transfer credits combined and who have not completed three credits of Math and three credits of Composition will have a hold placed on their account preventing registration. Students are notified by email, each term prior to registration, that they need to complete the Mathematics and/or Composition requirement if they have not already done so. When a student has earned 60 or more credits, the email will include notification of the hold and information on how to remove it.

Removing Mathematics Holds

To remove a Mathematics Hold, first determine whether or not the Math Placement Tool is necessary for the class you want to take. If you have not completed the Math Placement Process, you can find information and preparation materials on the Math Department website.

Once you know you have the necessary prerequisites, refer to the Class Schedule in your RAMweb account to select the appropriate Math course(s) to satisfy the requirement. If you are not sure which course you should take, consult with your advisor/academic support coordinator or refer to your Degree Progress Audit found in RAMweb.

If you complete the Math Placement Tool, contact the Office of the Registrar no sooner than the day after completing the Math Placement Tool to have the hold removed and to be registered for your selected Math course(s). When emailing, include your name and CSU ID number.

  • You must complete the required Math course during the term that the hold was in effect.
  • If you drop or withdraw from the Math course(s), you will have the hold placed on your record again prior to registration the next term.
  • It is in your best interest to complete the Math requirement as quickly as possible.

If you have documentable extenuating circumstances for why you cannot complete the Mathematics requirement during the term the hold has been placed for, you can submit a Mathematics appeal form to request the hold be removed for one term.

Removing Composition Holds

For more information concerning Composition Holds, please refer to the composition website.

To remove a Composition Hold, select the appropriate composition course from the Class Schedule in RAMweb and contact the Office of the Registrar to register for the course. When emailing, include your name and CSU ID number.

  • You must complete the required Composition course during the term the hold was in effect.
  • If you drop or withdraw from the Composition course, you will have the hold placed on your record again prior to registration the next term.
  • It is in your best interest to complete the Composition requirement as quickly as possible.

If you have documentable extenuating circumstances for why you cannot complete Composition during the term the hold has been placed for, you can submit a Composition appeal form to request the hold be removed for one term.
