State of Colorado Tuition Assistance Program
Any member of the Colorado National Guard is eligible for state tuition assistance (TA), up to 100% tuition paid at any of the approved schools by the DVMA. State funding can be used in conjunction with Federal Tuition Assistance.
Requirements of the Department of Military Affairs (Colorado National Guard) State Tuition Assistance Program:
- Beginning July 1, 2000 any new member of the Colorado National Guard eligible for State Tuition Assistance must have a minimum of 6 months of service in the Colorado National Guard. Interstate Transfer (ISTs) and In-Service Recruits (ISRs) are waived from this requirement.
- To get TA the member must be in drilling status with the Colorado National Guard. If the member leaves drilling status, during the semester/quarter for which they are receiving TA, the member must reimburse the Department for the whole amount of TA received for that semester.
- Must maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average.
- There is no longer a repayment of service for state tuition assistance (2 years for every 1 year of tuition).

The Federal Military Tuition Assistance Program

To obtain federal military tuition assistance, you need to visit your installation’s education office in order to receive college counseling and develop and education plan. From that point, you can submit a military tuition assistance request.
Important items to keep in mind:
- We have a limited window of time to enter your grades for each term.
- Please make sure you enter the correct term date for a class. Keep in mind that when you finish working on the class and the end of the term can be two different dates. For example: you may be able to complete a class in eight weeks, however, there may not be a grade available until the end of the term; in this situation we cannot report your grade. If we are unable to report your grade to your branch of service YOU will be billed for the class and in some cases it will be taken out of your pay directly. Once this occurs we do not have the ability to update information or help you recoup the pay by submitting a grade. Changes to the term date is the direct responsibility of the service member since it is tied to the invoice.
- Please let us know when you drop a class or change your registration. Also please update your registration with your branch of service in the tuition assistance (TA) portal.
The Top-Up Benefit
To be eligible for the Top-Up benefit, you must be approved for federal Tuition Assistance by a military department and be eligible for GI Bill benefits. To be eligible you must be an GI Bill participant, still on active duty, and must have served at least two full years.
The amount of the benefit is limited to the amount that the person would receive for the same course if regular GI Bill benefits were being paid. In no case can the amount paid by the military combined with the amount paid by VA be more than the total cost of the course.
If you receive the Top-Up benefit, your regular GI Bill benefits will be reduced. The amount of entitlement charged for Top-Up payments as follows:
- If you are utilizing the Montgomery GI Bill your entitlement is charged based on the dollar amount of benefits VA pays you. You will be charged one month of entitlement for each payment you receive that is equal to the full time monthly rate for the GI Bill.
- If you are utilizing the Post-9/11 GI Bill your entitlement is charged based on the training time you are enrolled in. If you are going to classes at the 1/2 time training level you will be charged 1/2 month of Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits for each month you are enrolled and receiving GI Bill benefits – (it does not matter how much money you are reimbursed)
The new requirements for eligibility include the member must be on active duty at the rank of petty officer 1st class or below and pursuing undergraduate courses, only. Reservist members on extended active duty also qualify. For eligible members, benefits are restored to pre-suspension levels of $250 per individual credit hour and an annual cap of $4500. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty education programs in support of a Soldier’s professional and personal self-development goals. TA is available for courses that are offered in the classroom or by distance learning and is part of an approved academic degree or certificate program. The courses must be offered by schools that are registered in GoArmyEd, are accredited by accrediting agencies that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and are signatories to the current Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding (DOD MOU).
For academic programs, Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree, TA may not be used for a lower or lateral degree program from the one the Soldier currently possesses. In addition to degree programs, TA is available to Soldiers to complete a high school diploma and to complete certificate programs. TA is not authorized for programs of study beyond a master’s degree.
The Department of Defense (DoD) has directed a uniform per semester hour cap of $250 for tuition assistance (TA) and an annual ceiling of $4,500. The Services are authorized to establish Service specific eligibility criteria to manage TA funds. The Army will pay 100 percent of tuition costs up to the DoD semester hour cap of $250 per semester hour cap for up to 16 semester hours of TA funded courses per fiscal year. School fee charges of any type are no longer eligible for funding with TA. Please contact your Base Education Office to apply and get more information.
Air Force Tuition Assistance (TA) is an important quality of life program that provides 100% tuition and fees for courses taken by active duty personnel. The program is one of the most frequent reasons given for enlisting and re-enlisting in the Air Force.
The maximum amount paid for Tuition Assistance: 100% Tuition and Fees
Not to exceed:
- $250 @ Semester Credit Hour, or
- $166 @ Quarter Credit Hour, and
- $4500 @ Fiscal Year
Application Process: You must apply for Tuition Assistance online using the Air Force Virtual Education Center. This must be done through the Air Force Portal at https://www.my.af.mil/. There are six steps to completing the AFVEC online TA process.
Tuition Assistance (TA) is available to both Naval Officers and Enlisted active duty personnel and some Naval Reservists on continuous active duty. It is also available to:
- Enlisted Naval Reservists ordered to active duty for 120 days or more
- Naval Reservist Officers ordered to active duty for 2 years or more.
To qualify, service members must:
- be on active duty for the whole length of the course.
- attend an institution accredited by a regional, national, or professional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- receive counseling from a Navy College Office or a Virtual Education Center counselor
- provide all grades from previously funded TA courses and reimburse all W and F grades. (Withdrawals for involuntary reasons may be granted with command verification.)
Agree, if an officer, to remain on active duty for at least two years upon completion of courses funded by TA. This obligation runs concurrently with remaining obligated service time. Those who fail to serve the obligation must repay the TA funds expended on their behalf during the last two years of active duty on a pro-rated basis.
Tuition Assistance (TA) is available for all active duty Marines. Each member receives $4500.00 per fiscal year (1 Oct-30 Sep). There is a cap of $250 per semester hour, $166.67 per quarter hour, and $16.67 per clock hour. Tuition assistance is also available to Reservists on continuous active duty, enlisted Reservists ordered to active duty for 120 days, and to Reservist Officers ordered to active duty for two years or more. The eligibility guidelines are as follows:
First time Applicants:
- A minimum GT score of 100, a minimum TABE score of 10.2 OR a MASP completion certificate.
- Complete the College 101 online course; print, sign and submit the certificate.
- Read, initial and sign the Statement of Understanding.
- Obtain authorization from your command prior to beginning the course.
- After registering for course/s with the school, fill out Tuition Assistance Application.
Applicants who have used TA before, but it is the first time processing with MCAS or MCRD, the following is needed:
- Obtain authorization from your command prior to beginning the course.
- Applicant cannot have more than two outstanding grades.
- Applicant cannot have any TA debt.
After registering for course/s with the school, fill out Tuition Assistance Application.
